Capriccio 2026

AVA 25 26 Capriccio 032

Project Overview

Capriccio, Richard Strauss's final opera, explores the power of both poetry and music, and whether one is more beautiful. On the birthday of the widowed Countess Madeline, she is torn between her two fervent suitors, the poet Olivier and musician Flamand. When she is forced to decide the end of an opera, mirroring her choice between the suitors, Madeline faces the eternal questions of the meaning of art and love.

For the AVA's production of Capriccio, we designed a modern set, reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement. Through custom fabrication and scenic painting, visually striking flats were crafted and delivered alongside a custom modular staircase. The expert craftsmanship and design brought an elegant twist to the opera, combining Bauhaus visuals from the time of the opera's creation with the story set in 18th-century Paris.
